Cyprus GHS: Citizen Satisfaction but Concerns over Waiting Lists

Six years after the implementation of the General Healthcare System (GHS) in Cyprus, a survey indicates that the majority of citizens are satisfied, although confidence has slightly decreased compared to 2023. The reduction in the cost of healthcare services is the greatest benefit, while waiting lists remain the most significant problem.
According to the results of a survey presented at the 8th Cyprus Healthcare Conference in Nicosia, 86% of citizens believe that the GHS has improved the quality of services provided, compared to 92% in 2023. Additionally, 88% see a positive impact on quality of life, compared to 93% two years ago.
80% of participants reported a reduction or elimination of the cost of accessing medical care, while 84% reported that their household budget was relieved. Private insurance has decreased to 31%, from 42% before the implementation of the GHS.
However, 57% believe that waiting lists for visits to specialist doctors remain the most serious weakness of the GHS. Other problems include the non-coverage of certain tests (50%) and the process of obtaining a referral from a personal doctor (49%). Nevertheless, 74% acknowledge that waiting times have improved in the last year.
Interestingly, citizens rated their knowledge of their rights and obligations under the GHS poorly.
Regarding the entry of foreign investment funds into the healthcare sector, 75% believe that the acquisition of large private hospitals in Cyprus by multinational companies will improve medical infrastructure and technologies.
