Limassol Fires: Harrowing Testimonies and Proposals from Community Leaders

In an emotionally charged atmosphere, the community leaders of the areas affected by the fire in mountainous Limassol gave their testimonies at the joint session of the Parliamentary Committees on Interior, Agriculture, and Environment on Tuesday.
The community leader of Malia, Marilena Athini, thanked the services and the Civil Defense for their support. She stated that the fire started from the main road of Malia-Arsos and not from an illegal garbage dump. She also emphasized the delay in the response of the fire trucks.
The community leader of Lofou, Giannos Neophytou, a volunteer of the Civil Defense, informed about the evacuation of the village and the children's camp, in consultation with Loizos Konstantinou, President of the Confederation of Parents.
The community leader of Pano Kyvides, Konstantinos Papatheodorou, described the difficult moments and his decision to change the evacuation plan due to the smoke.
Matthaios Protopapas, President of the Vouni community council, mentioned that the village is full of narrow streets, while the community leader of Vasa Koilaniou, Michalis Mosfilis, described the extinguishing efforts.
The community leader of Koilani, Kyriakos Kyriakou, ordered the evacuation of the village, despite the contrary instructions of the Civil Defense.
Nikos Vikis, the community leader of Souni, stated that 90 houses were burned, while a representative of the Alassa community council expressed complaints about the refusal of a grant for a fire truck.
The community leaders submitted their proposals for improving the handling of fires.
