Cyprus Audit Office Warned of Preparedness Issues Before Devastating Fire

Two months before the devastating fire of July 23, 2025, the Audit Office (ΕΥ) warned of a lack of preparedness in managing aerial firefighting resources. In its report, the Auditor General of the Republic of Cyprus, Andreas Papaconstantinou, highlighted the "inability to properly manage such a critical issue", despite the lessons of 2021.

The Audit Office's report concerned the management of contracts for aerial firefighting resources for the period 2021-2024. The extent of the fire, which led to the death of two people, the injury of dozens, the evacuation of fourteen communities, and the destruction of 100 square kilometers of land, raises questions about the adequacy of the state mechanism.
