Environment Commissioner: Cremation of dead animals from fires to proceed

The Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner, Antonia Theodosiou, announced that they will proceed with the cremation of dead animals found in areas affected by the fires. These animals were either trapped in houses or were free in the area.
In statements to ΚΥΠΕ, Ms. Theodosiou stressed the need for cooperation with local authorities, Veterinary Services, and a cremation company to collect and cremate the animals. She mentioned that some owners may wish to take their animals, but this is dangerous and difficult due to the need for identification.
The Commissioner noted that there is no exact picture of the number of dead animals. She categorized the animals into wildlife, companion animals (owned and stray), and farm animals. Regarding wildlife, she highlighted the destruction of habitats and the impact on the nesting period.
Regarding companion animals, Ms. Theodosiou stated that volunteer organizations, with the assistance of the Police, have taken action. The Game and Fauna Service will proceed with an action plan as soon as the fires are under control.
