Parents Oppose OELMEK Strike Action in Cyprus

The Pancyprian Confederation of Parents' Associations of Public Secondary Schools has expressed strong opposition to OELMEK's decision to hold a work stoppage on Thursday, December 18, 2025, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
In a statement, the Confederation emphasized that it would not tolerate the use of students as a "pressure lever" for trade union demands. OELMEK's decision has caused discontent among parents, who recall the disruption caused by a previous work stoppage on November 19.
The Confederation recognizes the right to strike, as enshrined in the Constitution, but stresses the need to respect students' right to education. It also called on the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth to take measures to facilitate students affected by the work stoppage.
The Plenary of the Confederation's Board of Directors will discuss the issue on December 18 for further decisions. The Confederation expressed hope that the House of Representatives will vote on a new Plan for the Evaluation of Educators and Educational Work on December 22, putting an end to the disruption.
