The existence of illegal waste dumps, often near forests and Natura 2000 areas, remains a critical fire hazard. The issue resurfaces after the devastating fire on July 23.

Despite existing legislation, many Communities and Municipalities are not adequately fulfilling their cleaning obligations, endangering public safety. The Press Officer of the Fire Service, Andreas Kettis, emphasized that a fire in a waste dump can threaten communities.

It is estimated that there are more than 600 illegal waste dumps, according to mapping by the Department of Environment. The data has been sent to the Union of Municipalities and Communities.

The Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, stated that €1 million was allocated for 16 Community Complexes for the removal of vegetation and garbage, but only 35% was absorbed.

The difficulty of local authorities to act quickly is highlighted. Also, stricter penalties are needed through changes in legislation.
