Protest over zoning and quarry issues in Dhekelia

The Dhekelia Communities Services Complex Council held a protest outside the Dhekelia Bases police station, expressing concerns regarding the revision of the Policy Statement and Zoning and the expansion of the Xylofagou quarry zone within the British Bases.
In a memorandum submitted to the Political Administrator of the Dhekelia British Bases, Maria Kyriakidou, the Council, consisting of the communities of Xylofagou, Xylotymbou and Ormideia, stated that despite assurances, there has been no official statement, leading to social, economic and developmental consequences.
The President of the Complex, Sotiris Kekcouris, stressed the need for immediate consideration of the requests through dialogue and transparency. Ms. Kyriakidou pledged to forward the memorandum to the leadership of the British Bases.
The British Bases Administration stated that it respects the right to protest and that the examination of objections to the zoning is nearing completion, with the final zones expected in the spring of 2026. At the same time, it stated its commitment to supporting the expansion of the quarry in Xylofagou.
The President of the Larnaca District Self-Government Organization, Angelos Hatzicharalambous, expressed his support for the demands of the Complex, while Giorgos Ioulianos, President of the Xylofagou Community Council, called for equal treatment for residents.
Antonis Foti, President of the Ormideia Community Council, stressed the need for immediate and binding decisions. The President of the Pancyprian Quarry Association, Antonis Latouros, referred to delays regarding the expansion of the quarries.
The protest took place under strict security measures.
