Seismic Upgrades Completed in 730 Schools – 78 Still Pending

The Parliamentary Committee on Education discussed the progress of projects in school buildings, with the head of the Technical Services Department of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, Andreas Maragos, stating that the needs amount to €1 billion.
Mr. Maragos emphasized that there is planning for the necessary infrastructure, but the timelines depend on the approval of the development budget by the Ministry of Finance. For 2026, the budget is €35 million, an amount considered limited due to the large number of projects.
The seismic upgrade of 730 school buildings began in 2000, with 78 still pending. Some of these, after 26 years, need demolition instead of upgrading. Construction costs are increasing, creating additional constraints.
The President of the Nicosia School Board, Nikos Megalemos, stated that each school board needs at least €500,000 to €1 million for maintenance. For example, upgrading the toilets in Nicosia requires €15,000-€20,000.
Members of Parliament pointed out that the budget, although increased since 2012, is €20 million lower than in 2011. DIKO MP Chrysanthos Savvidis stated that with the current budget it will take 30 years to cover the needs. DISY MP Giorgos Karoulas stressed the need to increase the budget and restructure the Technical Services. AKEL MP Christos Christofidis highlighted the pressing needs in school infrastructure.
DIPA MP Alekos Tryfonidis stated that he will raise the issue of drawing European funds.
