Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Two New Farms Quarantined in Oroklini

Two new livestock farms in Oroklini were placed under quarantine on Saturday after cases of foot-and-mouth disease were detected in goat and sheep farms. The measures are being implemented based on the emergency action plan of the Veterinary Services.
The head of the Veterinary Services, Christodoulos Pipis, stated that the measures already in place around the cattle farm in Livadia will also be applied to the two new farms, as they are considered to be in the same epidemiological area.
The goats and sheep on the two farms in Oroklini will be culled and buried, as will the 260 cattle on the farm in Livadia. Within a 3-kilometer zone, the movement of animals and livestock products is prohibited without the approval of the Veterinary Services.
The Veterinary Services rejected reports of inadequate information for farmers and will investigate reports of concealed cases. Mr. Pipis stated that efforts are being made to reinforce the staff of the Veterinary Services.
The existence of a suitable burial site near Oroklini is being examined, while the new cases do not provide new information about the origin of the virus.
