Shelter Weaknesses: New Spaces and SafeCY Operation

The Minister of Interior admitted significant weaknesses in the policy implemented since 1999 regarding the creation of shelters in existing private spaces. Nearly 500 of the 2,480 Civil Defense shelters were deemed unsuitable.

The Ministry of Interior is adopting a new approach, prioritizing public spaces, increasing population coverage from 30% to 45%. This includes municipal underground parking lots, church basements, supermarket, hotel, and office building underground parking.

Additionally, a new service was announced through the SafeCY application for timely information to citizens in case of emergency. The Deputy Minister of Innovation, Nikodimos Damianos, urged citizens to install the latest version of the application. Support is provided via the number 14-50.
