Christiana Erotokritou: Smarter and More Effective Spending by the State

The Deputy President of DIKO, Christiana Erotokritou, in an interview, referred to the state budget for 2026 and the need for more effective spending.
Erotokritou, who is also the President of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, emphasized that the budget confirms the stable course of the Cypriot economy, with healthy fiscal figures and a decrease in public debt.
However, she stressed the need to examine whether each expenditure makes sense and pays off, identifying room for improvement in areas where funds do not translate into projects. She referred to the phenomenon of development projects remaining on paper, with low rates of absorption of funds.
Erotokritou argued that the budget can work in favor of citizens and businesses, defining investments in areas such as digital transformation and the green transition. She also referred to the importance of targeted social policies that provide relief to vulnerable groups.
Regarding the tax reform, she described it as an important turning point for strengthening the competitiveness of the economy. She stressed the need for measures against tax evasion and strengthening the fairness of the system.
Finally, she referred to the completion of her term as President of the Committee on Finance, emphasizing the need for better coordination with the ministries and strengthening parliamentary control.
