Parliament Approves Referral for Electricity Market Regulation

The Plenary of the Parliament accepted the President's referral to the amending law for the regulation of the electricity market with 26 votes in favor and 12 abstentions from AKEL.
The referred law aims to define the conditions and duration of license extensions for electricity generation and storage projects, as well as to regulate their connection to transmission and distribution networks. The referral was based on legal ambiguities and issues of compatibility with EU law.
DISY MP, Kyriakos Chatzigiannis, stated that the initial bill aimed to ensure transparency and accountability. Famagusta MP, Michalis Yakoumi, described the reform as one of the most important in the field of CERA licensing.
On behalf of AKEL, Kostas Kosta stated that, although several of the party's points of disagreement were included in the reasons for the referral, the revised text constitutes an important step. The President of the Ecologists, Stavros Papadouris, stated that there was a distortion in the system.
