Belgium Considers Allowing Shops to Open 7 Days a Week
Share on:

The Belgian government is considering lifting the mandatory weekly closing day for shops, potentially allowing them to operate seven days a week until 9 PM. The proposal aims to adapt to modern consumer needs and enhance the competitiveness of physical stores against e-commerce.

The Comeos retailers' federation supports the change, while small businesses and trade unions express concerns about the impact on smaller businesses and employees.

Several large chains, such as Delhaize, Carrefour, and Colruyt Group, already operate partially on Sundays by utilizing legal exceptions. The bill is expected to be reviewed by the Central Economic Council and, if approved, will take effect three months after its publication.
