Consumer Association Protests High Prices of Imported Lemons

The President of the Cyprus Consumers Association, Marios Drousiotis, expressed concerns today regarding the prices of imported agricultural products. Specifically, he referred to the price of lemons from Egypt, which reaches €3 per kilogram.
Mr. Drousiotis stated that while imported products are usually cheaper, they are often sold at the same prices as Cypriot products, with the result that consumers do not benefit from imports. "Is it permissible these days to sell Egyptian lemons for €3 per kilo?" he asked, pointing out that the lack of sufficient Cypriot production allows prices to be maintained at high levels.
Mr. Drousiotis stressed that there are no specific data on the exact impact of drought on the prices of agricultural products, but he acknowledged that weather conditions affect the quantity of production and, consequently, prices.
