The President of DIKO, Nicholas Papadopoulos, stressed from Paphos the need for cooperation and restraint in dealing with the foot-and-mouth disease crisis in livestock farming.

Mr. Papadopoulos noted that the situation can remain manageable provided that European protocols are fully implemented and livestock farmers are supported.

As he mentioned, the EU Health Commissioner assured him that the situation is manageable as long as the protocols are implemented to prevent the spread of the disease. Otherwise, there will be a complete destruction of livestock farming.

Mr. Papadopoulos added that the Democratic Party has requested cooperation in managing the crisis, warning of irreversible damage to livestock farming.

In addition, it was ensured that the compensation to livestock farmers for the animals that will be killed will be significant and will cover the loss of profits and income. This, according to Mr. Papadopoulos, will help livestock farmers return to their previous state by the summer.

Finally, he warned that if the necessary measures are not implemented, there is a risk of crises in livestock farming, not only for cows but also for other animals such as pigs and sheep.
