EU Measures on Airbnb: What to Expect

The European Commission is preparing measures for short-term rentals like Airbnb, aiming to address the lack of affordable housing in the EU. The responsible commissioner, Dan Jørgensen, emphasized the need for action, warning of a social crisis and the rise of anti-European populists.
The EU plan, to be published in December, considers addressing the 'financialization' of housing and protecting tenants' rights. Relaxing the rules on state aid is also under consideration.
Between 2010 and 2023, house prices in the EU increased by 48% and rents by 22%. In 2023, almost 9% of the EU population spent 40% or more of their income on housing.
EU leaders will discuss the issue at the next summit.
