Cyprus: Support Measures Highlight Economic Weaknesses

The eight measures announced by President Christodoulides to address the impact of the war in the Middle East are considered positive, given the economic conditions. They provide immediate relief to consumers and support hotel businesses and farmers.
However, the need for these measures underscores long-standing weaknesses in the economy, such as over-reliance on oil and tourism, as well as the difficulty in managing crises such as foot-and-mouth disease.
The government is urged to take strategic decisions in energy and economic policy, promoting energy plans and strengthening new sectors of the economy. In addition, strengthening state services is required to avoid mistakes, as in the management of foot-and-mouth disease.
The measures, totaling €100 million, are expected to affect the fiscal situation. If the war continues, the state of public finances may worsen, with a possible increase in inflation and unemployment.
