Germany: Unemployment Exceeds 3 Million Amid Recession

The number of unemployed people in Germany exceeded 3 million in August, for the first time since February 2015. Official figures indicate that the persistent economic recession is negatively impacting the labor market.
According to the Federal Employment Agency (BA), the unemployed reached 3.03 million, an increase of 46,000 compared to the previous month and 153,000 year-on-year.
Andrea Nahles, chairwoman of the BA, stated that this increase is partly due to the summer holidays. The last time more than 3 million unemployed were recorded in August was in 2010.
While some sectors, such as health and public administration, are showing an increase in job positions, the manufacturing sector and temporary employment continue to decline.
The president of the Employers' Association (BDA), Rainer Dulger, criticized the refusal to implement reforms and called for an 'autumn of reforms'. The coalition government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz is expected to implement tax and social reforms to revive the economy.
