Taxing the Super-Rich: Overwhelming Support in Greece and Europe
Share on:

Surveys indicate overwhelming support for taxing the super-rich in Greece and Europe, aimed at funding climate action and public services.

According to a recent Eurobarometer survey, 7 out of 10 Greeks support adopting a tax on the wealthiest individuals to ensure they pay a minimum level of taxes. 80% agree that large multinational corporations should pay a minimum tax in each country where they operate.

At the European level, Italy shows the highest support (94%), followed by Spain (91%), France (90%), the United Kingdom and Germany (85%).

Only a minority of European countries currently levy taxes on the wealthy. Net wealth taxes are imposed in Norway, Spain, and Switzerland, while wealth taxes on selected assets exist in France, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Oxfam supports the G20 proposal to tax the super-rich with wealth exceeding $1 billion, with a minimum tax of 2% annually.
