New Tariffs on Small Packages from China: What You Need to Know

The European Union Council has approved the imposition of new customs duties on small packages entering the EU, mainly from e-commerce. This move aims to address unfair competition.
Specifically, the exemption from duties for packages worth less than 150 euros is abolished. From July 1, 2026, to July 1, 2028, a temporary fixed duty of 3 euros per category of goods per package will apply. After 2028, normal customs duties will be applied through a new pan-European platform.
The 3-euro duty is imposed per category of goods. For example, a package with one silk blouse and two wool blouses will be charged 6 euros in duty.
The measure applies to small packages sent directly to consumers in the EU.
