Water Scarcity a Security Issue, Official Says in Brussels Event

The Director-General of the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, Andreas Grigoriou, highlighted that water scarcity is increasingly recognized as an issue of security, economic stability, and resilience of food systems. He spoke at the «FoodDrinkEurope» event in Brussels.

Mr. Grigoriou pointed out that water resilience and adaptation to climate change are key priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in 2026.

During the event, he referred to Cyprus' experience in managing water scarcity, emphasizing the more efficient use of water resources, the diversification of water sources, and long-term planning.

Particular reference was made to innovation and investments in water-saving technologies, as well as the utilization of the reuse of treated water.

Mr. Grigoriou underlined the role of the European food and beverage sector in reducing water consumption and strengthening cooperation with the primary sector.

Mr. Grigoriou's participation in the event is part of the effort to exchange experiences at European level and to highlight Cyprus' contribution to water resources management.
