Net Billing Transition: Thousands of Applications for Photovoltaics
Share on:

Today was the last day for installing photovoltaic systems under the net metering scheme. Under this system, electricity bills for consumers who generate their own electricity via photovoltaics are offset, so they only pay the difference between consumption and production.

The EAC announced that from January 1, 2026, it will only sign contracts for Net Metering and Virtual Net Metering (net billing) for customers who applied to connect their Photovoltaic System to the Distribution System Operator from 1.1.2026 onwards.

According to the newspaper "Phileleftheros", 81,000 households (16%) already have photovoltaics installed, while 4,000 applications are pending.

Fanos Karantonis, President of the Association of RES Companies, stated that net metering does not affect existing contracts.

From tomorrow, photovoltaic installations will only be done with the net billing system.

The EAC states that in net billing, if the exported energy exceeds the imported energy, the consumer will be credited the amount for the next period.

Fanos Karantonis noted that the change was expected, following European practices.

Net metering is considered unfair to those who cannot install photovoltaics, while with net billing, consumers will pay for the network and services.
