Strict disinfection measures have been implemented at the port and airport of Thessaloniki following the confirmation of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in livestock on Lesvos. The Deputy Regional Governor of Agricultural Economy of the Region of Central Macedonia, Giorgos Kefalas, informed the Regional Council and stressed the need for immediate action.

It was decided to install disinfection stations at the port for vehicles and disinfection mats for passengers. Similar measures are being taken at Thessaloniki Airport for arrivals from Lesvos. Mr. Kefalas described the situation as "extremely critical," as foot-and-mouth disease is highly contagious and can affect pigs, sheep, goats, and cattle.

Mr. Kefalas emphasized that the measures will be "extremely strict," as there are indications that the disease in Lesvos had been present for several days without being detected. He also stated that there is no risk to consumers, but there is a risk of transmission from transport vehicles.

Communication has already been established with the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace to take similar measures there as well. The veterinary staff of the Region has been placed on red alert, and all leave has been revoked.
