British Museum: New 3-Year Loan Model for Antiquities – What About the Parthenon Sculptures?

The British Museum is promoting a new loan model for antiquities taken from other countries, with a maximum duration of three years. This comes amid increasing pressure for the repatriation of antiquities, such as the Parthenon Sculptures.
The new model was inaugurated with the loan of 80 exhibits (Indian, Egyptian, Roman, and Greek) to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) museum in Mumbai. The director of the British Museum, Nicholas Cullinan, stated that cultural diplomacy is the path museums should follow.
Cullinan clarified that proposals for the permanent return of antiquities are not accepted, but negotiations are ongoing. He mentioned that each case is different and requires a different approach.
Greece has stated that it will not accept a solution involving the 'loan' of the Parthenon Sculptures, as it would imply recognition of British ownership. Nevertheless, communication channels with the British Museum remain open.
