Epiphany: Purification, Rebirth, and Memory of Centuries

On January 6th, the Baptism of Christ and the blessing of waters bring to the forefront an ancient symbol of life and purification. The central role of water in this celebration is not accidental or exclusively religious, as the relationship of the Greek world with water extends back millennia.

From Minoan Crete, specially designed underground spaces, the so-called 'purification tanks,' testify to the early connection of water with symbolic purification. In archaic and classical Greece, water acquires philosophical and poetic density, with Pindar attributing to it 'ἄριστον μὲν ὕδωρ'.

The ecclesiastical tradition receives this semantic charge and theologically transforms it, identifying water with the gift of the Holy Spirit and the renewal of creation. The prayer of the Great Blessing summarizes this continuity of centuries, making water a common place of ancient ritual tradition and Christian faith.

At Epiphany, water continues to speak of purification, life, and light with words that Greeks have recognized for thousands of years.
