Mary Ann DeVlieg: On cultural rights and the crisis of democracy

Mary Ann DeVlieg, a prominent figure in culture, participated in the CultureNext network conference in Larnaca 2030, where she spoke about the role of culture in times of democratic crisis and the rights of artists.
DeVlieg emphasized the importance of the lasting legacy of the European Capitals of Culture (ECOCs), stressing that cities must demonstrate their commitment to leaving a positive legacy.
She referred to the need for cyclical public policy, where citizens converse with policymakers, and stressed the importance of dialogue with artists and cultural workers.
DeVlieg explained the "ethics of care" as a philosophical practice that includes values such as attention, responsibility, competence and responsiveness, and its application to culture.
Regarding artists at risk, she referred to initiatives and organizations that support them, despite the tightening of entry visa regimes.
Finally, she stressed that everyone has the right to cultural rights and that culture can function as a "trust institution" in societies characterized by polarization, provided that art and cultural activities are designed with the values of care.
Mary Ann DeVlieg's speech took place at the 16th Culture Next Conference in Larnaca 2030.
