Criticism of "Thymeli" Scheme and Demands for Improvements

The Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassianidou, acknowledged that the "Thymeli" theater subsidy scheme needs improvements. During an open discussion on February 16, 2026, theater representatives expressed concerns about their financial viability, requesting an increase in funding in line with European standards.
The General Director of the Deputy Ministry of Culture, Giorgos Papageorgiou, advocated for transparency in subsidies. It was announced that the proposal for expression of interest for the 2nd semester of "Thymeli" will be announced on March 1, 2026.
Actors and directors, such as Marinos Xenofontos from "Anemona Theater", referred to conflicting interests and the inadequacy of funds to cover operating expenses. Valentina Sofokleous stressed the need for a fairer allocation of funds, while Christina Christofia emphasized the importance of collective agreements and increased funding.
Leandros Taliotis expressed disappointment at the lack of vision of the Deputy Ministry of Culture, while Marinos Anogyriatis called for additional support for theater outside Nicosia. Lea Maleni stressed the need for a broader cultural policy plan and infrastructure improvements.
