Criticism of Visual Arts Support in Cyprus

In his article titled "Make Room," Evagoras Vanezis comments on the weakening of structures that contribute to the development of culture. He refers to the eviction of the Association of Visual Artists and Art Theorists from the Municipality of Nicosia, noting a question asked at a meeting: "Who exactly is this community?"
Vanezis emphasizes that this question implies devaluation and ignorance of public bodies towards the visual arts scene. The nursery, as he mentions, is a collective space for thought where participants experience democracy. It represents different generations of artists and art theorists, who work collectively and face economic insecurity.
The artists are waiting for a bill for a decent pension, a museum of modern art, employment opportunities, and incentives for investment in local art. They remain active, monitoring and intervening in art issues. They emphasize the need to restructure cultural structures and healthy institutions, stressing that the local art scene is complex and requires solutions that respond to its difficulties.
Without the Nursery and other associations, there can be no feedback to decision-making centers, Vanezis emphasizes.
