Yiannis Smaragdis' new film, "Kapodistrias," premiered in Cyprus, presenting the life of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of Greece. The film focuses on Kapodistrias' selfless service and self-sacrifice for the creation of an independent Greek state.

Kapodistrias, a moral figure in Greek politics, abandoned a brilliant career and distributed his fortune for the freedom of Greece. The film highlights his role in saving Switzerland from the Austrians and France after Waterloo.

As Governor, Kapodistrias worked to create laws, coin currency, and provide hope to the Greeks. He faced opposition from the local elites, who opposed his efforts to impose taxes on the wealthy and distribute part of the clergy's wealth to the poor.

The film refers to the assassination of Kapodistrias by Konstantinos and Georgios Mavromichalis, an act that brought Greece to the brink of collapse.

Smaragdis' film comes at a time when citizens are looking for selfless politicians and honoring service and self-sacrifice.
