Yiannakis Case: Acquitted of 5 out of 8 Charges

A development occurred on Wednesday in the case of the former Commissioner for Volunteerism, Yiannis Yiannakis, which is being tried in the Nicosia District Court, as he was acquitted of five of the charges he faced, which concern the preparation of a forged document and the circulation of a forged letter of recommendation.
It is noted that Mr. Yiannakis has already admitted to three of the charges (charges 1, 2, 8) he faces, which concern the circulation of forged official documents knowingly and fraudulently. More specifically, he is accused of presenting documents to the Republic of Cyprus as official from an American University and a Cypriot High School as genuine.
Yiannis Yiannakis initially faced nine charges, one of which was suspended, while last April he admitted to three of the eight remaining, which are considered the most serious, as they carry a prison sentence of up to ten years. However, because the case is being tried by a District Court, the sentence that can be imposed on him is up to 5 years, while the offense of circulating a forged letter of recommendation, which is not considered an official document, carries a prison sentence of three years.
