Chios: Moroccan Man's Lawyers Say Passengers Don't Recognize Him as Trafficker

The lawyers of the 31-year-old Moroccan man accused of trafficking in the Chios shipwreck strongly reacted to the decision to remand him in custody. According to the defense, at least six passengers testified that they did not recognize him as a trafficker.
The 31-year-old's lawyer, Alexandros Georgoulis, stressed that there are many preliminary investigation testimonies that support his innocence. "In no way does he accept that he drove the specific boat. There are many preliminary investigation testimonies which essentially support his innocence," he characteristically stated.
Dimitris Choulis, also the defendant's lawyer, called the decision unfair, pointing out that it was based on only one testimony, ignoring the testimonies of six other people who say the opposite. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the port officers who caused the accident are investigating the case themselves.
The defense has filed a request for the prosecution witness to be recalled to support his claim, as his testimony is in complete contradiction with the testimonies of the other survivors.
