Parliament: Fraud Against Mentally Ill for Property Seizure

Frauds against individuals with psychiatric problems by their relatives were revealed in the Human Rights Committee. It was reported that relatives of patients do not administer medication or administer other substances to patients, in order to have them admitted to Athalassa Hospital and misappropriate their property.

The Human Rights Committee requested a change in the legislation for legally incompetent individuals, transferring responsibility from relatives to the state. Complaints were also made about the fact that Athalassa Hospital is not integrated into the General Healthcare System (GESY), and there is no protocol for cooperation between Social Welfare Services and the Ministry of Health.

According to data from 2021 and 2022, psychiatric services managed 1,914 cases, of which 130 involved minors.
