Fines Issued for Cigarettes from Occupied Territories at Agios Dometios

On October 26 and 27, 2025, the Department of Customs issued fines to two individuals at the Agios Dometios crossing point for possession of duty-free tobacco products originating from the occupied territories.
Specifically, on 26/10, a 59-year-old Romanian citizen was found transporting 15 cartons of 200 cigarettes each, 2 cartons of 200 and 5 packs of 20 heated cigarettes, as well as 1.4 kg of rolling tobacco. She was fined an out-of-court settlement of €2500, plus €500 for the return of the vehicle.
Also, on 27/10, a 63-year-old Syrian with Cypriot citizenship was found transporting 18 cartons of 200 cigarettes each, 13 cartons of 200 heated cigarettes each, 3 kg of rolling tobacco, and 425 grams of pipe tobacco. He was fined an out-of-court settlement of €3000, plus €500 for the return of the vehicle.
In both cases, the tobacco products did not bear the necessary markings and traceability codes.
