Authorities are investigating a new case of the spread of foot and mouth disease. According to Customs Spokesperson Giorgos Konstantinou, there is information about the involvement of a second person, who may have farms in both the free and occupied areas.

The new case is possibly related to the case of the 75-year-old and the illegal transportation of products. The man is allegedly involved for years in the illegal transportation of tobacco products, hay and straw, and had been arrested in the past transporting calves to the occupied areas.

Cyprus is on heightened alert following the detection of foot and mouth disease cases. The Veterinary Services have activated the Emergency Plan for category A animal diseases, based on the European Regulation.

The competent Services warn that foot and mouth disease, one of the most contagious zoonotic diseases, is treated with strict and predetermined protocols.

The Veterinary Services are monitoring the situation on a continuous basis, with the aim of immediately limiting the disease and protecting livestock and production.
