The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, announced that 133 arrests have been made in the walled city of Nicosia in the last nine months. The arrests mainly concern illegal employment and illegal stay in the Republic of Cyprus.

At a press conference at the Ledras Police Station, Mr. Hartsiotis, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Nikos Ioannidis, the Deputy Chief of Police, Panikos Stavrou, and the Deputy Mayor of Nicosia, Chrysanthos Fakas, stressed the need to strengthen the sense of security in the area, especially in view of the establishment of universities in the area.

The Minister announced additional measures, such as patrols by the MMAD and the presence of motorcyclists from Group Z in Eleftheria Square.

According to Mr. Hartsiotis, the Old City of Nicosia has been affected by lawlessness, but with the new measures it is expected to regain its former glory.

Various services participated in the operations, such as the Deputy Ministry of Migration, the Police, the Municipality of Nicosia and the Fire Service.

During the checks, 310 establishments and 670 people were checked, while 170 traffic controls were carried out. Sanitary deficiencies and tax violations were also detected.
