Cyprus: Beware of "Pig Butchering" Scam via Dating Apps

A new scam, known as "Pig Butchering," has surfaced in Cyprus, according to a Reddit post. A user described how they almost fell victim to the scam through a dating app, ultimately avoiding financial loss.
The user matched with a woman presenting herself as Russian named Kristina. The communication evolved with the exchange of voice messages and photos. Subsequently, the conversation shifted to investments, with "Kristina" promising high returns without risk. Despite no direct request for money, the goal was to build trust for future investment.
The user identified inconsistencies in the woman's locations, as well as her tactic of building trust through romantic connection and financial promises. The post sparked discussions about the role of artificial intelligence in creating fake voices and images, as well as the need for vigilance in online dating.
"Pig Butchering" is a sophisticated scam that mimics human communication to financially deceive victims. Dating app users are urged to be cautious and question suspicious signs.
