Cyprus: 182 Deaths from Drug Overdose (2004-2023)

The Cyprus National Addictions Authority (AAEK) is raising awareness about drug overdose deaths, marking International Overdose Awareness Day. From 2004 to 2023, 182 deaths have been recorded in Cyprus.
In 2023, there were 17 incidents, mainly due to stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine. Christos Minas, President of AAEK, stated that there is a shift from opioids to stimulants as the primary cause of death.
AAEK is implementing prevention strategies, such as strengthening substitution therapy for opioid users, ensuring continuity of treatment in prisons, and promoting the availability of naloxone. The aim is to reduce the stigma for users and their families.
Eleftheria Square in Nicosia was symbolically lit in lilac color, honoring the victims and expressing support to families.
