The Cyprus National Addictions Authority (ΑΑΕΚ) is raising awareness about drug overdose deaths. From 2004 to 2023, 182 deaths were recorded in Cyprus. In 2023, there were 17 incidents, mainly due to stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine.

Christos Minas, President of ΑΑΕΚ, stated that while deaths were previously mainly due to opioids, there is an increase and shift towards stimulants. ΑΑΕΚ continues prevention efforts, strengthening substitution treatment for opioid users, ensuring continuity of treatment in prisons, and promoting the availability of naloxone.

International Overdose Awareness Day has the slogan "Uniting Forces for Life" this year. Eleftheria Square in Nicosia was symbolically lit in lilac color.
