Private Criminal Prosecutions Filed in Thanassis Case

Within two weeks, private criminal prosecutions are expected to be filed in the Limassol District Court regarding the death of 26-year-old National Guardsman Thanassis Nikolaou. According to the family's lawyer, Nikos Kleridis, the prosecutions concern seven individuals.
Specifically, the prosecutions are against forensic pathologist Panikos Stavrianos, four former police officers who served in the Limassol Police Directorate at the time of the death, and two former National Guard officers.
Mr. Kleridis explained that, initially, the court must accept the registration of the prosecutions. Subsequently, the Attorney General has the right to suspend or not the private criminal prosecution, in case of objection from the other side.
It is recalled that Thanassis Nikolaou was found dead under the Alassa bridge in 2005. The third inquest into the case concluded on May 10, 2024, with coroner Doria Varoshiotou announcing that his death was due to strangulation.
