Limassol Fire: Investigation into Responsibilities for the Destruction

As flames continue to rage in mountainous Limassol, discussions about responsibility have begun. The public demands answers regarding negligence and potential arson.
Former Director of the Fire Service, Markos Tragkolas, referred to "chronic pathologies" and omissions, emphasizing the absence of firebreaks in the Limassol district. "Limassol is the only province without firebreaks," he stressed.
Minister of Justice Marios Hartsiotis and Minister of Environment Maria Panagiotou called for patience, emphasizing that the priority is extinguishing the fire.
MEP Loukas Fourlas denounced delays in activating the European rescEU mechanism, while MEP Giorgos Georgiou requested the creation of a European firefighting airbase in Cyprus.
Police are investigating all possibilities for the cause of the fire, including arson, following testimonies that the fire started from two points, as stated by Kyriaki Lambrianidou.
