Cyprus Prison Search: Cell Phones and Knives Found in Inmates' Cells

Searches were conducted at the Central Prisons today to locate mobile phones and other illegal items in the possession of high-security prisoners. The searches were carried out by the Police in cooperation with the prison administration, in three cells of life-sentenced prisoners. According to philenews, a mobile phone and a makeshift knife were found in one inmate's cell.
The items were confiscated and will be examined to determine who the inmate was communicating with. Administrative sanctions will also follow.
The searches were carried out this morning following information that high-security prisoners were communicating with people outside the prisons. The day before yesterday, a search in a cell of a low-security prisoner also found a mobile phone, and the detainee was arrested in connection with the attempted murder and arson in Pyla.
The prison administration and the Police are conducting frequent raids to locate mobile phones. A bill is being promoted to criminalize the possession and use of mobile phones by prisoners, visitors and staff, as well as the implementation of a signal jamming system.
