Mayor of Kyrenia Calls for Investigation into Vandalism at St. Phanourios Cave

The Municipality of Kyrenia condemns the vandalism at the St. Phanourios cave, in occupied Ayios Georgios, Kyrenia. The Mayor, Iosif Violari, called on the Government to exert pressure for an immediate investigation into the matter.
Greek Cypriot visitors reported a shameful scene, with broken icons, used condoms, and signs of drug use. Mr. Violari expressed concern about the state of Kyrenia, which has undergone extensive concreting.
He also mentioned the conversion of the Church of Archangel Michael into a museum, where maintenance is not allowed. The Mayor expressed fears that the events at St. Phanourios may be an attempt to prevent the annual church service on August 27.
