Athens Airport was again top of Europe for its marketing strategy and actions to develop the Athens market, in the over 20 million passengers category, as voted by the airlines.
At this year’s largest annual meeting of the European aviation industry “Routes Europe 2024” (April 22-24) held in Aarhus, Denmark, Athens Airport once again won first place. The Routes Awards are unique in that the voting and decision process rests solely with the airlines, rewarding excellence in aviation development worldwide. This year’s distinction is even more “impressive”, as in the same category as the Athens airport, Istanbul IGA, Rome Fiumicino, Brussels Airport, and Vienna Airport were candidates for distinction.
This year’s nomination of the airport, which won impressions also in the creative part by focusing on the art of strategy but also on the “big chessboard” of the wider field of international air transport, presented the impressive – on a European level – development achievements of the Athens market: In 2023 a total of 28.17 million passengers were transported through Athens airport, performance increased by 24% compared to 2022 and by 10.2% compared to 2019, while also in the first quarter of 2024, the upward trend of traffic is spectacular, recording performance increased by 16.5% compared to the corresponding period last year. At the same time, five new destinations, eight additional airlines and 19 additional routes to existing connections have been added to the Athens International Airport network for the summer of 2024.
Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director of Communication & Marketing of Athens International Airport said: “The great first place in the highly competitive Routes Europe awards makes us very happy and is a strong motivation to continue working hard for the connectivity of the airport and our city. This distinction honors us in particular, as it comes from the vote of our direct partners, the airlines, which on the one hand recognize the impressive dynamics of Athens in 2023, and on the other hand reward the airport’s undivided assistance and support as it develops further in our market . And of course, a warm thank you to my partners, the aviation marketing team, for a truly team effort with an excellent result.”
